Rwanda continues to lead the charge in Africa’s transition to electric mobility with the launch of the region’s fastest electric vehicle (EV) supercharger. Installed by Kabisa, one of East Africa’s top EV service providers, this state-of-the-art ultrafast charging hub is a significant milestone in sustainable transportation. The initiative aims to provide a cost-effective, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuel-powered vehicles, helping businesses and individuals embrace electric mobility with ease.

Unprecedented Charging Speed for Rwanda’s EV Market

Located at SP’s Kanombe station in Kigali, the newly launched supercharger boasts an impressive 240 kW power output—far exceeding the conventional 7.43 kW to 22 kW range found in most local charging stations. This means that EV owners can now fully charge their vehicles in just 15 to 25 minutes, drastically reducing downtime for commercial operators and fleet owners who rely on quick turnaround times to stay productive.

For those considering an EV purchase, understanding the best electric cars available in Rwanda can help you make an informed decision.

Boosting Regional Logistics and Commercial Transport

This groundbreaking technology plays a crucial role in enhancing regional logistics. With faster charging, electric commercial trucks can now transport goods seamlessly across East Africa, from Rwanda to major ports like Mombasa and Dar es Salaam. This development marks a pivotal step in revolutionizing cross-border transportation, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Rwanda: A Leader in Africa’s EV Revolution

Rwanda has been at the forefront of Africa’s EV movement, thanks to progressive policies and incentives encouraging green transportation investments. Kabisa has played a key role in this transition, establishing the country’s largest public EV charging network with 26 stations—seven of which are hosted at SP locations. The new Kanombe supercharger further strengthens this infrastructure, strategically positioned near Kigali International Airport and the Free Trade Zone, an essential corridor for commercial transport.

Kabisa’s Vision for a Sustainable Future

During the launch event, Kabisa’s Managing Director, Pophia Muhoza, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding Rwanda’s EV charging network. “We are excited to introduce Rwanda’s first ultrafast EV supercharger, accessible to all electric vehicles. This is just the beginning of our mission to build a convenient, high-speed charging ecosystem across East Africa. Our goal is to empower businesses and individuals to fully experience the benefits of EVs, including lower emissions, cleaner air, and cost savings.”

Yves Legrux, CEO of SP Rwanda, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the station’s strategic importance: “SP Kanombe has long served as a vital connection between Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Hosting this ultrafast charger aligns with our commitment to supporting sustainable mobility and providing exceptional service to road users.”

How EV Adoption Benefits Rwandan Businesses

The transition to electric mobility is already making a significant impact on Rwanda’s economy. Solid’Africa, a local NGO dedicated to combating food insecurity, has leveraged EVs to reduce operational costs while promoting sustainability. CEO Nassir Katuramu shared insights into how switching to electric vehicles has streamlined their logistics and enhanced cost efficiency.

In addition to lower costs, Rwandan businesses also benefit from incentives like reduced import taxes and government subsidies. Learn more about the cost savings of owning an EV in Rwanda.

A Bright Future for Rwanda’s EV Sector

Kabisa’s ultrafast charging hub represents a bold step toward an electrified future in East Africa. As more businesses recognize the financial and environmental benefits of EV adoption, investments in sustainable transport infrastructure will continue to reshape the region’s mobility landscape.
