Rwanda’s registered vehicles hit 394,157 in the 2024/25 fiscal year, a 13.7% jump. Here’s what’s fueling the growth — and what it means for drivers.

Rwanda Vehicle Registration News 2026: Car Ownership Keeps Rising

Rwanda’s roads have officially crossed a new milestone: as of the 2024/25 fiscal year, the country has 394,157 registered private vehicles, according to fresh Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) tax statistics published in November 2025 and reported this January. That’s up from 276,925 just four years earlier — a jump of over 42% since 2020/21, and the fastest single-year leap yet, with registrations climbing by 47,571 vehicles (13.7%) compared to the previous year alone.

What’s actually driving the numbers

Motorbikes remain the biggest single category by far, reaching 215,097 units in 2024/25 — a 15.4% increase from the year before. But it’s not just two wheels doing the heavy lifting. Sedans grew 12.7% to 60,993, SUVs jumped 17.3% to 50,631, and even heavier categories like trucks (17,554, up 13.7%) and buses (14,824, up 7.8%) posted solid gains. Trailers had the single biggest percentage jump of any category, rising 21% year-on-year.

Alexis Habimana, a sales manager at Akagera Motors, points out that the surge isn’t only about dealership sales — a meaningful share comes from individuals privately importing vehicles, including from grey markets in manufacturing hubs like China and from Europe. That’s a detail worth knowing if you’re car shopping yourself: dealership showrooms are only part of the picture in Rwanda’s current vehicle market.

The EV thread running underneath the growth

Part of what’s quietly reshaping this picture is Rwanda’s aggressive push on electric mobility. With zero import duty, VAT, and excise on EVs (for vehicles valued up to $60,000), plus a government mandate that at least 30% of newly procured public-sector vehicles go fully electric, Rwanda has built one of the more serious EV incentive frameworks on the continent — and Kigali’s 2025 ban on new petrol motorcycle registrations means a real chunk of that motorbike growth figure is likely leaning electric going forward. Companies like Ampersand, running electric motorcycles and battery-swapping stations, are becoming a familiar part of Kigali’s streets rather than a novelty.

If you’re weighing a new vehicle purchase and want to explore where the electric shift is heading, EV24.africa is worth a look for import options as more Rwandan buyers start factoring EVs into the decision.

What this means if you’re buying

More cars on the road mean more competition for good used-vehicle deals, but also a deeper pool to choose from. If you’re shopping the used market rather than importing privately, auto24.rw is a solid place to start browsing what’s actually available locally right now, from sedans to SUVs, without the uncertainty that can come with a private grey-market import.

The road-wear question nobody’s asking loudly enough

One thing worth watching as this trend continues: infrastructure. A near 13-14% annual growth rate in vehicles is a lot of new pressure on road networks built for a smaller fleet, and Kigali’s traffic during peak hours already reflects it. It’s a good problem to have economically, but not one that fixes itself just because the vehicle numbers keep climbing.

The bottom line

Rwanda’s vehicle fleet isn’t just growing — it’s diversifying, with SUVs and trailers posting the sharpest gains alongside steady motorbike demand. Whether that next vehicle on Rwandan roads ends up being a private import, a dealership SUV, or an electric motorcycle probably says as much about where the country’s economy is heading as it does about any single buyer’s taste.
